Srirangam Srinivasarao Biography

Srirangam Srinivasarao, popularly known as Sri Sri was a Telugu poet and lyricist. He has been the Vice President of the South Indian Film Writers Association and and President of the revolutionary writers association of Andhra Pradesh. He is the recipient of Soviet Land Nehru Award and Sahitya Academy Award (1972). In 1975, he received National Film Award for Best Lyrics for Alluri Seetha ramaraju (Telugu). Nandi Award for Best Lyricist and Raja-Lakshmi Award in 1979 by the Sri Raja-Lakshmi Foundation are the other film awards received by him. Srirangam Srinivasa Rao was the first true modern Telugu poet to write about contemporary issues of common man. He was a radical poet and novelist.

 

Rao was born on 30 April 1910 in Visakhapatnam. He married Venkata Ramanamma at an age of 15 and adopted a girl child. His second marriage was with Sarojini. One son and three daughters are there in this wed lock. He went to Chennai in 1928 for higher studies and completed it within 3 years. In 1938, he joined as a sub editor of 'Andhra Prabha' daily newspaper. He has also worked for AIR and armed force. His poems reflected social issues most than mythological themes, that were not common in those days. His book Maha Prasthanam, a collection of poems is regarded as the best work written by him. Other major works include Siprali and Khadga Srushti.

 

He entered into Telugu cinema with Ahuti in the year 1950. Hamsavale O Padava, Oogisaladenayya and Premaye janana marana leela were the popular songs. He has written more than 1000 songs for Telugu movies and has also written the script of a few movies. Nanduni charitamu vinuma from Jayabheri, Evvari kosam ee mandahasam of Nartanasala, Na hrudayamlo nidurinche chelee of Aradhana, Devudu Chesina Manushulu title track, Devudu ledani anakunda of Karunamayudu and Maro prapancham pilichindi of Maha Prasthanam are only a few handpicked songs from his literal pieces.
