Sriprakash Jaiswal Biography

Sriprakash Jaiswal is an Indian politician and former parliamentarian belonging to Indian National Congress. He represented Kanpur in Lok Sabha three times, and was in office for long 15 years representing the same constituency, during 1999–2014, and lost the elections in 2014. He served as Minister of Coal during 19 January 2011 – 26 May 2014, under Manmohan Singh. In 2009 parliament, he served as Minister of State (Independent Charge) holding dual charges of Coal and Statistics And Programme Implementation.

Sriprakash Jaiswal was born on 25 September 1944 in Kanpur, Uttar Pradesh. He is married to Maya Rani Jaiswal since 1967, and the couple has 2 sons and 1 daughter. As a member associated with Indian National Congress, he turned active in politics in the 1980s. He served as Mayor of Kanpur city in 1989, before being elected to parliament from same constituency for three consecutive terms between 1999 and 2014. He also served as the president of Uttar Pradesh Congress Committee during 2000 - 2003. Later he rose to an influential figure in national level politics, after a series of Lok Sabha wins, and earning a position in Manmohan Singh’s cabinet.

Though he remained an influential leader from Kanpur, he has been associated with some controversies and corruption stories too. When Indian coal allocation scam surfaced in 2012, as the cabinet minister of coal, his name got linked with scam stories. Jaiswal, however, maintained his stand of allegations made and also supported Prime Minister Manmohan Singh. His sexist remarks against women at a cultural event in Kanpur also sparked controversies. He had to apologize later, when his remarks received nationwide protest.
