Srinibash Udgata Biography

Srinibash Udgata is a well-known writer associated with Odia language. He has excelled as a playwright, poet as well as novelist and translator. He is also a painter. For his overall contributions to Odia theater and literature, government of India honoured him with Padma Shri in 2008. Sarala Award in 2002, Sarala Samman in 2002 and Acharya Vidyasagar Samman from Kolkata are other major honours received by him. He has been awarded and honored by more than 100 organizations in India. Sambalpur University honoured him with an honorary doctorate. He served as the President of Orissa Sahitya Akademi from 1994 to 1997.


Srinivas Udgata was born on 6 January 1935 in Balangir, Odisha. Apart from authoring books, he also delivers lectures and speeches for literal events, and is actively involved in activities related to promotion of Odiya literature. Some of his popular books include – Purnima, Parbati, Khali Tharute, Dibya Purusha, Kipari Kahibi Mu, Chhada Anchala Mahabahu, Ranipadra O' Anyanya Kahani, Sei Subasita Atmati etc. Rutam is the Collection of his Poems. He was given the title, "Vidyavachaspati" by Prayag Sahitya Sammelan, Allahabad. For his contributions to Odia literature, he has been honoured by Kendriya Sahitya Academy too.


He has worked as a translator for many language works to Odia. Some of his published novels include – Kanta, Nila Nayana Tale, Byaghrarohan, Bhari Kathina se preeti paliba, Sesha Ratrira Prathama Sakala, Sesha Chitau, Shilara Sapana and Ahira Bhairaba. He currently serves as the president of Writers' Association, Atmaprakashani and also many more administrative positions in the literal world. Apart from writing, he also holds the passion of a painter, though not for full-time.
