Srikanth Kidambi Biography

Srikanth Kidambi is an Indian badminton player who currently holds the highest rank among Indian players. As on April 2016, he is at no.10 in World Badminton ranking. He is the first Indian to win a Super Series Premier Men's title. He achieved this recognition after winning 2014 China Open Super Series Premier. He beat Lin Dan by 21–19 21–17 in the final round. In the 2011 Commonwealth Youth Games in Isle of Man, Srikanth won the silver in mixed doubles and bronze in doubles. He won gold at the 2015 Swiss Open Grand Prix Gold, becoming the first male badminton player to win gold in this series. He also won India Open Super Series in 2015. He currently trains at the Gopichand Badminton Academy and is sponsored by Li-Ning.

 

He belongs to Guntur, Andhra Pradesh. He was born on 7 February 1993 to a landlord KVS Krishna. Srikanth’s elder brother K Nandagopalis also a badminton player and has played till national level games. Similar to Ghosh brothers from Kolkata, Dipu and Roman, who dominated the national badminton circuit in the late 1960s, K Nandagopal and K Srikanth - repeated the Ghosh brothers' feat when both reached singles semifinals of 77th Senior National badminton championships. It happened after long four decades. Both are trained at the Hyderabad-based PullelaGopichand Academy.

 

The brothers have been training from PullelaGopichand Academy since 2008. Before that they trained under Sudhakar Reddy from Vishakhapatnam. He also won against his academy partner Guru RMV Gurusaidutt in the 77th Senior National badminton championships.SrikanthKidambi’s successful journey started in 2011 with Commonwealth Youth Games when he earned two medals, followed by wins at singles and doubles at All India Junior International Badminton Championship held in Pune the same year. He claimed Men’s singles title in 2012 beating ZulfadliZulkiffli of Malaysia and since then he is the best Indian male player in badminton.
