Sridhar Rangayan Biography

Sridhar Rangayan is an Indian director who focuses on queer subjects. The Pink Mirror and Yours Emotionally are the best instances which portrays realistic and sympathetic portrayal of Indian gay community. The Pink Mirror has not been released in Indian yet, due to its homosexual content. As a gay activist, he has been one of the front-rank leaders in the LGBT movement in India. He along with Ashok Row Kavi founded The Humsafar Trust, the first gay NGO in India. He is a trustee and member of this organization as well. In 2006, he was awarded the South Asian Achievers Award for his contribution to global mainstream media by Triangle Media Group, UK. He has served on the Jury for the Teddy Awards at the 60th Berlinale and a few more international events.

Sridhar was born on 2 April 1962 in Mandya, Karnataka. He took graduation from National Institute of Technology Karnataka. Later he took PG in Design from Industrial Design Centre, IIT Bombay, specializing in Visual Communication. He has worked as a Mass Media Officer and a textile designer before entering into cinema and NGOs. In 1994 he attended a short course in FTII and later worked as an apprentice of many leading Indian film makers. It included both films as well as television serial work. He was the Associate Director for the serial Dawn aired on Star Plus. From 1999 to 2002, Rangayan scripted and directed several television series like Krisshna Arjun, Kahani Jurrm Ki, Pyar Ki Kashti Mein, Kaagar, Rishtey and Gubbare.

In 2001 he founded his production company Solaris Pictures along with his partner Saagar Gupta and they specialized to make movies with gay themes only. Gulabi Aaina was their first work which was screened at more than international film festival events. His first feature was Yeh Hai Chakkad Bakkad Bumbe Bo which won the Bronze Remi Award at WorldFest. He has also done a few documentary films.
