Sri Lal Sukla Biography

Sri Lal Sukla was a Hindi writer who was recognized with Jnanpith Awards in the year 2010 along with another Hindi writer, Amar Kant. He is a writer notable for his satire. He has worked as PCS officer for the government of UP and later inducted into the IAS. He retired from Indian Administrative Service in the year 1983. He has published more than 25 books of which Makaan, Sooni Ghaati Ka Sooraj, Pehla Padaav and Bisrampur Ka Sant are most popular works. Shukla received Sahitya Akademi Award for his novel Raag Darbari in 1969. He received the Vyas Samman award in 1999 for the novel Bisrampur ka Sant. He has received Sharad Joshi Sammaan by the Madhya Pradesh Government in the year 1996 and Maithili Sharan Gupta Sammaan, the next year.

 

Other recognitions include - Vyas Sammaan by the Birla Foundation (1999), Yash Bharati Sammaan by the Uttar Pradesh Government (2005), Emeritus Fellowship by the ICCR, Government of India (1987), Goyal Sahitya Puraskaar by Kurukshetra University (1991), Sahitya Bhushan Award (1988) and Lohia Sammaan (1994) by Uttar Pradesh Hindi Sansthaan. Sukla was one among those great writers of India who highlighted the falling moral values in the Indian society post independence. His books are the exposures of negative impact of rural and urban life style in a satirical manner. His most popular satire works include - Kuchh Zameen Mein Kuchh Hava Mein, Khabron Ki Jugaali, Angad Ka Paanv, Yahaan Se Vahaan, Meri Shreshtha Vyangya Rachnayein, Umraaonagar Mein Kuchh Din, Jahaalat Ke Pachaas Saal and Aao Baith Lein Kuchh Der.

 

First novel Sooni Ghaati Ka Sooraj was published in the year 1957 and first satire work, Angad Ka Paanv the following year. His works include criticism as well and a few of them include - Bhagwati Charan Varma , Amritlal Naagar and Agyeya: Kuchh Rang Kuchh Raag. His novels are Sooni Ghaati Ka Sooraj – 1957, Raag Darbari (novel) – 1968, Bisrampur Ka Sant – 1998 and Babbar Singh Aur Uske Saathi – 1999.
