Soundarya Biography

Soundarya was a famous actress who appeared in films of almost all south Indian languages. She was born on July 17, 1971 in Bangalore. Her parents are Satyanarayana, producer and director of Kannada films and Manjula. Her birth name was Soumya. After her successful career as a heroine in the Tamil, Telugu, Kannada and Malayalam films, she died in the plane crash together with her brother Amarnath on April 17, 2004 in Jakkur airfield Bangalore.

 

Soundarya wanted to pursue her higher education in the field of medicine and joined MBBS. She got an opportunity to act in the Kannada film Gandharva in the year 1992 when she was in her first year of MBBS. Later, in 1995 after the film Ammoru, she discontinued her studies. The only Hindi film she acted was Sooryavamsham. The Kannada film that she produced herself and acted, Dweepa won the Golden Lotus award given for the best film of the year. She also got Best Actress award, Best film award, Best Cinematography award for this film.

 

She played her role in more than 90 films in all. Some of them are Anthapuram, Amman, Hellobrother in Telugu, Padayappa, Thavasi, Arunachalam, Ponnumani, in Tamil, Sooryavansham in Hindi. Her last Kannada film Aaptamitra was a great success. Her wonderful talent in acting combined with her graceful face with nice color complexion won her many chances. She never wanted to appear in glamorous role and always preferred family stories.

 

She married the son of her maternal uncle, G.S.Raghu, software engineer and her childhood friend on 27th April 2003. Within one year of her married life she lost her life in the plane crash when four-seater Cessna 180 caught fire when she was on her way to take part in a campaign for BJP in Andhra Pradesh.

 

She had great interest in the social welfare of the people and maintained an orphanage in Bangalore. Her husband in her memory founded Amara Soundarya social and Educational Trust and the Amara Soundarya Vidhyalaya is maintained by this trust. Karnataka Lalitkala academy issues Soundarya Memorial Award on her memory every Ugadi.
