Soumya Reddy Biography

Soumya Reddy is an Indian politician belonging to Indian National Congress. She is an environmentalist, human and animal rights activist, social worker and entrepreneur before she turned active in politics. She got elected as a member of the Legislative Assembly of Karnataka from Jayanagar on June 13, 2018 defeating Bharatiya Janata Party candidate, B N Prahlad by a margin of 3,775 votes. She won the prestigious Jayanagar constituency, which had a strong hold by BJP, and this win brought her to limelight in the political future of India. She is the daughter of Karnataka’s former Transport Minister, R. Ramalinga Reddy. She is a vegan animal rights activist and environmentalist, who has followed her father’s footsteps to enter politics.

Prior to her entry in politics, she has been associated with grassroots activism, research, training, community mobilization, humane education, animal welfare, environmental protection and similar missions with an experience of 13 years. Following those principles, she had a Zero-Waste, Vegan Wedding in 2015. She is married to Abhishek Raje.

Soumya was born into a political family on 18^th December, 1981. Bangalore is her home town, where she was brought up. She was born to the famous politician and former state minister Ramalinga Reddy and Chamundeswari Reddy. She has one brother too. A social activist, she is the vice president of Youth Congress in Bangalore city.

After the death of Jayanagar’s BJP MLA, B. N. Vijaya Kumar election was held once again in the constituency. BJP though made a major win in number of seats in Assembly elections, it could not form ministry. Yet they were in full confidence of winning the seat in re-election. But the young candidate defeated B N Prahlad by a margin of 3,775 votes, to the shock of many.
