Sonny Mehta Biography

Sonny Mehta is a leading journalist and media personality of the country, who currently serves as editor-in-chief of Alfred A. Knopf and chairman of the Knopf Doubleday Publishing Group. His wife Gita Mehta is a leading Indian journalist and English writer. Sonny Mehta is the son-in-law of two times Chief Minister of Odisha, Biju Patnaik, and his brother-in-law Naveen Patnaik has been serving the same post for the past 18 years since 2000. He was named Person of the Year by American based Publishers Weekly in the year 2015.

 

His real name is Ajai Singh Mehta, born in the year 1942. His father Amrik Singh Mehta was among the first of independent India's diplomats. His childhood days were spent in different cities across the world, as his father had to travel extensively as a part of his profession. He completed his schooling in Sanawar School, India, followed by Sevenoaks School, UK. His higher studies were done at UK itself, completing graduation in two different subjects. He also served as an editor of a magazine then.

 

Mehta began his publishing career in 1965 in London, followed by Granada Publishing. The following year he co-founded the publishing house Paladin. Since then he has published many books of international writers around the world. He has also survived threats to the publishing business. Mehta has won Lifetime Achievement Awards for publishing in India, the UK and the US, and many more awards in his career as a publisher and media personality. His wife Gita Mehta belongs to a very influential political family of Odisha, yet she chose the field of media and writings, like her husband. Her books have been translated into 21 languages.
