Soli Sorabjee Biography

Soli Sorabjee is an Indian jurist and administrator from Mumbai, Maharashtra. He is a former Attorney-General of India, who has been honoured with Padma Vibhushan for his defense of the freedom of expression and the protection of human rights. While associated with government service, he served very high profile administrative positions, and earned a good reputation internationally. He authored the book 10 Judgements that Changed India. Noted jurist and economic, Nanabhoy Palkhivala was his close friend and his colleague. Sorabjee's daughter, Zia Mody is also a lawyer and partner at AZB & Partners.

 

Soli Sorabjee was born in Mumbai, Maharashtra on born 9 March 1930. He completed his graduation and law studies from Mumbai, and joined bar in 1953. He was awarded the Kinloch Forbes Gold Medal in Roman Law and Jurisprudence in 1952 while he was doing his law studies. Sorabjee was designated Senior Advocate of the Supreme Court of India in 1971. He served as Solicitor-General of India from 1977 to 1980, and Attorney-General of India from 1998 to 2004. While serving as Attorney-General of India, he was honoured with Padma Vibhushan in the year 2002. He worked on the Citizen's Justice Committee which represented pro bono the 1984 anti-Sikh riots victims.

 

He was appointed an Honorary Member of the Order of Australia in 2006. As a jurist, he has attended some of the prominent and high profile cases, involving influential politicians and leaders from other sections of society. He also authored a few non-fiction books, essays and articles. In 2018 as a part of #MeToo Campaign, a woman had filed a PIL accusing Sorabjee of sexual harassment. However the jurist rejected the allegations.
