Sohini Sengupta Biography

Sohini Sengupta is an accomplished film and theatre artist from Bengal. She is a member of the prominent theatre troupe – Nandikar. She is the daughter of the legendary Bengali theatre artists who steers Bengali theatre group Nandikar since many years - Rudraprasad Sengupta and Swatilekha Sengupta. The family is fully associated with Nandikar. Sohini Sengupta is also a National award winning film actress who received Best supporting actress award for her debut flick - Paromitar Ek Din, released in 1999. She received Ustad Bismillah Khan Yuva Puraskar for her contribution to theatre, awarded by Sangeet Natak Akademi in the year 2013. Swatilekha’s mother, Roma Halder, was a theatre person in Allahabad. Noted sculptor Meera Mukhopadhyay is her aunt.

 

Sohini was born to parents with strong theater background. Both Rudraprasad Sengupta and Swatilekha Sengupta are Kolkata-based. Swatilekha Sengupta joined Rudraprasad Sengupta headed Nandikar in the late 1970s and love blossomed between the two. Sohini was three years old when her mother decided to marry the theatre icon Rudraprasad Sengupta. When Swatilekha gets busy with her stage plays, it was her father who took care of her during her childhood days. At the age of 4 she accompanied her mother to sets of Satyajit Ray’s Ghare Baire.

 

Though she didn’t thought seriously about acting, in 1996 she acted in the play Gotraheen, which was a turning point of her life. Actually she wanted to become a teacher. The success of the play helped her to gain a strong foothold and it also gave her many film offers. Her mother is quite liberal who made her participate in Bengali, English and Hindi plays. Though she received National award for her debut film, she gave first priority to Nandikar. Paromitar Ek Din, Icche and Alik Sukh are the movies in which she acted till now. In 2002, Swatilekha directed her daughter in the play, Khuje Nao.

 

Sohini is married twice. She was first married to actor Goutam Halder, which ended in a divorce in 2006. Goutam Halder was quite active with Nandikar till the split. After divorce when he left Nandikar, Sohini had to take additional responsibilities. But it helped her to become economically independent, and grew up as a person. Her mother started taking swimming lessons at 57, just to encourage her and begin a new life. In she married her co-actor Saptarshi Moulik in 2013.
