Sivaraju Venkata Subbarao Biography

Sivaraju Venkata Subbarao was an eminent writer of Telugu language in the 20^th century. He is known by his pen name, Butchi Babu. He has published 70 short stories in as seven volumes. Those published works include - Meda metlu, Nannu Gurinchi Kadhavrayavu, Kalalo jarina kanneru, Nirantara Trayam, Teerpu Cheshina vadike Siksha, Tadi mantaku podi neeluu and Jnana netram. He has also published some finest essay collections, Nannu Marchina Pustakam and Neenu Shankarnarayan Nighantuvu, being the noted essays. Radio plays and stage dramas are other prominent works. Butchi Babu was a noted painter too.

Butchi Babu was born in 1916 at Eluru, Andhra Pradesh. After studies, he started his career as a teacher. He holds master’s degree in English. He initially served as an English lecturer in Anantapur and Visakhapatanam. His long term association with All India Radio began in the year 1945 and it was continued till his death in 1967. He used to write radio plays for All India Radio and many of those plays made him popular. As a writer, Chivaraku Migiledi is regarded as his masterpiece and it has been later made to a feature film in Telugu which earned numerous awards and appreciation. This novel was serialized in the Telugu magazine Navodaya during the period 1946-47 and got published as a book in the year 1952. This novel was a bestseller and often used for many research works in Andhra Pradesh.  

Apart from being the author of best-selling novel Chivaraku Migiledi, he is also regarded as a prolific short story writer. He has published 7 volumes of his short stories. He received prestigious Sahitya Akademi Award for Shakespeare Sahiti Paramarsa (A Critique on Shakespeare's literature) and he received this award posthumously.
