Sisir Bhaduri Biography

Sisir Bhaduri was an Indian stage actor. He was born on 2nd October 1889 in Ramrajatala in Howrah district of West Bengal. He was a student of Bangabashi School and got his graduation in arts from Scottish Church College in the year 1910. He received Padma Bhushan award by Government of India.

 

He completed his Master’s degree in English literature in the year 1913. When he was a student, he acted in many plays of English language and Bangla language. He acted in the play Baikunther Khata by Tagore and was highly praised for his performance.

 

He started his career as a teacher in the Metropolitan Institute and in Vidyasagar College. In the year 1921 he became a full time actor and left his teaching job and joined Madan Theatre in Kolkata. He was praised for his role in the play Alamgir. Due to some disagreement with the Madan theatre management, he left the theatre and started working in motion pictures and acted in the plays Andhare Alo and Chandranath by Sharat Chandra Chattopadhyay.

 

He formed his own group and started to stage plays in the year 1923. He staged the plays like Sita, Bisarjan, Prafulla, Sodashi, Nadir Shah, Nimchand and Chandrababu. He played the popular roles of Raghupati, Jaysingh, Yogesh, Jibananda, etc in his plays.

 

He established Srirangam theatre in 1942 which later came to be called as Bishwarupa theatre. His renowned productions are Michael, Bipradas, Bindur Chhele and Duhkhir Iman. He was an educated actor and he inspired many young people to take the profession of acting.

 

Some of the plays that he directed and acted include Chanakya, Talkie of Talkies, Seeta, Palli Samaj, Bicharak, Andhare Alo, Kamale Kamini, Mohini, etc. He died on 30th June 1959.
