Sirkazhi G. Sivachidambaram Biography

Sirkazhi G. Sivachidambaram was a famous Carnatic musician from Sirkazhi, Tamil Nadu. He is the son of legendary Carnatic musician cum playback singer Padma Shri Sirkazhi Govindarajan. Sivachidambaram too is a recipient of Padma Shri award by government of India, apart from Kalaimamani from the Tamil Nadu government. He is also a recipient of various honours like "Isai Peraringar" from Tamil Isai Sangam and Tamil Isai Vendar by Madras Music Academy. He was also honoured by Australian parliament in the 2002. He is also a physician specialized in Internal Medicine.

 

He was born in Chennai in a family with strong music background. His father Sirkazhi Govindarajan has been a legendary Carnatic musician from Sirkazhi. Sivachidambaram too step into his father’s shoes and followed by music tradition, though he is a qualified medical doctor. He completed MBBS from Madras Medical College, where he completed his post-graduation in Internal medicine as well. Later he also studied western music from Trinity College of Music London. He took formal learning in Carnatic music from B.Krishnamurthy since his childhood and continued it for years. He lost his father at a younger age. Sirkazhi Govindarajan died in his mid-50s.

 

Apart from his career as a musician he currently serves as a professor and the head of the department of MMC, Madras Medical College. Sivachidambaram rendered his voice for the popular song - Enadharumai Raanuva Veerargaal penned by former President of India - A. P. J. Abdul Kalam on the subject of 'Youth empowerment'. He was conferred the prestigious `House of Commons' title by Canadian Government in 2006 for recreating Tamilians in Canada through music and for fostering Tamil culture and tradition. This artist dreams to popularize songs of Subramanya Bharathi, Bharathidasan and Pattukottai Kalyanasundaram.
