Singeetam Srinivasa Rao Biography

Singeetam Srinivasa Rao is a National award winning film maker of south India who has also done a few movies in Bollywood. He has been associated with all the four south Indian languages as a producer and director. He is the director of the first silent black comedy film, Pushpaka Vimana. This blockbuster movie made in 1988 won National Film Award for Best Popular Film Providing Wholesome Entertainment and it starred Kamal Hassan and Amala in lead roles. His 1974 Tamil movie, Dikkatra Parvathi earned him National award for best regional film. Mayuri, Michael Madhana Kamarajan, Apoorva Sagodharargal and Dikkatra Parvathi are his other major works. He is a recipient of three Nandi awards. Bhairava Dweepam earned him best feature film (Bronze) and best director for the year 1994. He also won Silver award for the movie, Taram Marindi the same year. He won his single Filmfare award for the movie Mayuri.  

 

Singeetam Srinivasa Rao started his career as a columnist for magazines. He also scripted a few plays during this period, the most notable works being Brahma, Antya Ghattam, and Chitrarjuna. Chitrarjuna has been translated to many other languages and is regarded as his major work as a playwright. As a film maker, his major movies are in association with actor Kamal Hassan and most of the movies belong to satire category. Pushpaka Vimana is the best work of this magic duo, in which Kamal portrayed the role of an unemployed youth and his troubles and romance. Other movies in their association include Michael Madhana Kamarajan, Apoorva Sagodharargal and Kathala Kathala.

 

In 2002, he made a movie, Little John in English, Hindi and Tamil languages which starred Bentley Mitchum, Jyothika and Anupam Kher in lead roles. Akasa Veedhilo, Bhairava Dweepam, Madam and Brundavanam are among his Telugu works. In 1993, he made Bollywood movie, Phool which starred Madhuri Dixit and Kumar Gaurav in lead roles.
