Sikkil Mala Chandrasekar is a flutist belonging to Carnatic music. She is the daughter of Sikkil Neela, and niece and stepdaughter of Sikkil Kunjumani. Recipient of numerous honours including - Flute Mali award from Dr Raja Ramanna and Nyapati Ranganayakammal Award for Junior Flautists of the Madras Music Academy, Kalki Centenary Award, MD Ramanathan Award for a senior flautist, and the title of Venugana Siromani, she is one of the leading female flutists of Carnatic music at present.

She was born on 23 August 1963 into a family with strong music background. Her mother and aunt - known as Sikkil sisters were leading female flautists of Carnatic music in the post independent era. Her mother taught her the first lessons of flute. Her grandfather Azhiyur Natesa Iyer was a mridangam player. Mala started learning flute at the age of five from her mother and aunt. She did her arengattam at the age of 15 at Mylapore Chennai, after 10 years of rigorous training.

After that she performed with stage concerts and accompanied many vocalists. She was also an artist of All India Radio. She got selected by Doordarshan Kendra in 1980 to perform in “Ilam thendral” – a 15-minute programme. The program gave her enough exposure in the music circle and very soon she became a busy performing artist. In 1982, she received the first prize from AIR for “wind instrument category” and received the recognition from the legend M. S. Subbulakshmi. She also participated in inter-college festivals during this time.

She also got opportunity to work with Lalgudi in the 1980s, and through her marriage she became a relative to M. S. Subbulakshmi. She also performed ‘trio’ with Sikkil Sisters. Thus at a very young age she got exposure to the music world and earned success as well. She is also interested in painting, embroidery and hand work.
