Shyamaprasad Mukherjee Biography 
Shyamaprasad Mukherjee is an Indian statistician and retired professor from West Bengal. He hails from Kidderpore, Kolkata. Before retirement he served as Centenary Professor of Statistics at the University of Calcutta. He retired in the year 2004. Currently he is a visiting professor at University of Calcutta. He completed his education from Kolkata, then known as Calcutta before he began his professional career in teaching. One of the renowned teachers in the subject of statistics, he has contributed in a few areas of research and also authored a few books related to his subject. He is a Fellow of ISPS 2012, and is a recipient of Prof P V Sukhatme Award for Senior Statisticians in 2012 and C Mahalanobis Birth Centenary Award in year 2000.
Shyamaprasad Mukherjee was born in Kidderpore, Kolkata, in 1939 during British rule. For his 10th standard exams, he received 2nd rank in the state of West Bengal. A brilliant student then, he excelled in mathematics and statistics, and continued his studies in Kolkata. He completed M.Sc. in Statistics in 1960 and Ph.D. in Statistics in 1967 from University of Calcutta, before beginning his professional career as a lecturer. He joined Presidency College and then moved to University of Calcutta, where he taught for many years.
During his academic years, he also conducted research works and published a few research papers and books as well. He contributed towards the areas of Operations research, Applied probability, Reliability, Parametric and Bayesian estimation and Quality management. Some of his published books include - Graduate Employment and Higher Education in West Bengal, Quality: Domains and Dimensions and Frontiers in Probability and Statistics. After his active career as a professor, he is still teaching students.
