Shyama Singh Biography

Shyama Singh is an Indian politician associated with Indian national congress. She is a former parliamentarian too. She represented Aurangabad constituency during 1999-2004. Belonged to a prominent political family, she is the wife of Nikhil Kumar, a former IPS officer who has served as the governor of Mizhoram and Kerala and a former parliamentarian too. She is the daughter-in-law of prominent politician and CM from Bihar, Satyendra Narayan Sinha, and former parliamentarian Kishori Sinha (daughter of former MLA and social worker Rameshwar Prasad Sinha), and the grand-daughter-in-law of Dr. Anugrah Narayan Sinha, an Indian statesman who served as the first Deputy Chief Minister and Finance Minister of Bihar. Both her brothers are parliamentarians right now.

She hails from Patna, Bihar. She was born on 26 November 1942. Her father Sir T. P. Singh was a former civil servant. Her mother Madhuri Singh has served as a two-term parliamentarian. Her elder brother N. K. Singh is a former IAS officer and Rajya Sabha member while her younger brother Uday Singh is a Lok Sabha member representing Purnea constituency. She got married to IPS officer, Nikhil Kumar who joined active politics post retirement in 2001. When Nikhil took oath as Governor of Nagaland in 2009, she became First Lady of Nagaland. Nikhil has also served as Governor of Kerala for a short term.

Shyama joined active politics only in the late 1990s. She successfully contested Lok Sabha elections from Aurangabad constituency in 1999. She served a full term of 5 years. Shyama is an expert in gardening and the garden at 28 Akbar Road occupied by her family for long years is quite famous for its spectacular visuals and won many awards as well.
