Shyam Singh Shashi Biography

Shyam Singh Shashi is an Indian writer and academician from Uttarakhand. He is also an anthropologist and social scientist. He is best known for his writings on tribal people and nomads, and Government of India awarded him the fourth highest civilian award of Padma Shri in 1990. He published his research work as an encyclopaedia in different volumes over the years. International Encyclopaedia of Social Science (20 Vols-Set) in 2007, Encyclopedia of Indian Tribes in 1994, Encyclopedia of World Women and Encyclopedia Indica in 2002, The World of Nomads in 2006, Ekla Chalo in 2014, Roma: The Gypsy World in 1990 and Socio-History of Ex-Criminal Communities OBC's in 1991 are his published works till now.

Shyam Singh Shashi hails from present day Uttrakhand, earlier a part of Uttar Pradesh state. He took his master’s degree in Man Management and Manpower Planning from Manchester University. Later he moved back to India to do his research work on Himalayan nomads, and became the first student from Agra University to take a PhD in this subject. Later he joined government service. After working for many years he took voluntary retirement for his research works and publication of an encyclopaedia on tribal people and nomads.

He joined the International Institute of Culture and Languages as the chairman of their Media Research and Encyclopaedia divisions. He extensively worked on different tribals of India, and spent many years, and he published his research works as different volumes. He also edited many books and encyclopaedia related to this subject. He also published many poetry collections, travelogues, children's books and anthropological books, with a total count of over 300 books. He currently serves as a visiting professor of IGNOU.
