Shubhendra Shankar Biography

Shubhendra Shankar also known as Shubho Shankar was a musician, composer and also known as a graphic art. He is the son of great renowned couple, Ravi Shankar and Annapurna Devi, who divorced later. Their married life was later inspired to make the movie Abhimaan with another real life couple, Big B and Jaya Bachchan. Shubhendra had accompanied his father in many concerts, but didn’t elect solo career. He also played surbahar. He was the grandson of Ustad Allauddin Khan, renowned musician and the first recipient of Sanget Nadak Academy fellowship. He is the half-brother of world famous musicians - Anoushka Shankar and Norah Jones. Great musician Ali Akbar Khan was his uncle.

Shubhendra Shankar was born in 1942 to Ravi Shankar and Annapurna Devi, one year after their marriage.  Ravi Shankar was the most favourite disciple of Allauddin Khan and this marriage resulted in their personal split. However this marriage didn’t last too long as Ravi Shankar got romantically involved with Kamala Shastri, a dancer. Thus Shubendra’s parents got separated. He learned the sitar from his mother Annapurna Devi though didn’t complete the training. He left for USA with his father and lived with him in Hollywood. His first concert was in the year 1971, playing with his father at New York's Carnegie Hall in a show titled "Fathers and Sons".  Noted tabla players Alla Rakha and his son Zakir Hussain also participated in the concert. Later he assisted his father in several music concerts and never thought of starting a solo career. Instead he was drawn to painting and drawing, and earned a degree in fine arts from the Otis Art Institute of the Parsons School of Design in Los Angeles.

After marriage, he stopped music for almost 8 years and returned back with his father’s advice. He was 30 then and he restarted his career as a teacher. Shankar played together with his father at the Sawai Gandharva Festival in Pune in 1990. He passed away on 15 September 1992.
