Shubha Mudgal Biography

Shubha Mudgal’s name is most familiar among the Hindustani Classical singers of present times. She is a blessed singer who has given significant contribution to Indian classical music in the present era. Apart of being a trained classical singer, she has released a few classical pop albums like Ab ke sawan and Pyar ke geet (along with Sukhwinder Singh). She is also proficient in Khayal, Thumri and Dadra.

She was born in an academic family of Allahabad where her parents and grandfather were professors of Allahabad University. But the family had deep interest in Kathak and Hindusthani music that well reflected in Shubha’s life at an early age itself. Though she started learning Kathak in Allahabad, very soon she switched on to Hindustani music and she started learning it seriously from Pandit Ramashreya Jha. After graduating from Delhi University she continued learning classical music under Pandit Jitendra Abhisheki, Naina Devi and Pt. Kumar Gandharva. This time she took her learning seriously.

She started doing concerts during late 80’s and very soon she became popular. 90’s purely belonged to her era where she experienced a lot with her voice and talent. She was also interested in doing experiments with fusion music and pop tunes. Music and talent were in her veins and she became popular in this field too. Among different variants of music, Khayal and Thumri were her favourites and she loved monsoon a lot. She did such experiments with the monsoon song ‘Ab ke sawan’, where she sung with full energy and enthusiasm. Hers’ was high pitch voice and she was able to deliver high notes beautifully than any other trained classical singer. This unique quality is the biggest plus point of her singing caliber and we can witness such notes in songs like ‘Aaya re’ and ‘Pyar ke geet sunaya re’ of her album Pyar ke geet released in the year 1999. But she has sung slow numbers in low pitch voice too. ‘Aisa lage woh ghar aaya’ of Pyar ke geet is one such.

Other notable contributions of Shubha Mudgal include Mann Ki Manjeree, Ali More Angana, Shubh Deepavali, Classically Yours and Anand Mangal. About her personal life – she married twice.
