Shruti Choudhry Biography

Shruti Choudhry is an Indian politician and former parliamentarian from Haryana belonging to Indian national congress. She is the granddaughter of former chief minister of Haryana, Bansi Lal and the daughter of noted politicians, Kiran Choudhry and Surender Singh. Her maternal grandfather served in Indian army and was a war veteran Brigadier Atma Singh from Kumaon Regiment of Indian Army. While serving as a parliamentarian between 2009 and 2014, Shruti served as a member of the Lok Sabha committees for agriculture and empowerment of women.

 

Shruti Choudhry was born into a political and affluent family on 3 October 1975. Her parents are Surender Singh and Kiran Choudhry who served in state politics of Haryana, and have remained state ministers. She is the granddaughter of late Chief Minister Bansi Lal. She lost her father in a helicopter crash on 31 March 2005, when Singh aged 59, died along with noted industrialist and Power Minister Om Prakash Jindal during an emergency landing in Saharanpur district of Uttar Pradesh. Her mother is allegedly involved in Haryana Forestry scam case, a multi-crore fake plantation case, exposed by Sanjiv Chaturvedi, an Indian Forest Service officer. An inquiry committee of the MoEF found the allegations against Haryana government true, and currently the case is pending in court.

 

Shruti Choudry’s early education was done in Delhi, where she completed her schooling. Later she studied at Oxford, England. She also took graduation and LLB from Delhi University and started practising as a lawyer. She married Arunabh Choudrhy, a lawyer in 2003. She switched to politics following the death of her father in a helicopter incident. In 2009 general assembly elections she successfully contested from Bhiwani-Mahendragarh constituency, defeating senior politician Ajay Singh Chautala of the Indian National Lok Dal. The seat was earlier won by her father and grandfather multiple times. But in 2014 general elections, she got defeated.
