Shripad Yasso Naik Biography

Shripad Yasso Naik is a prominent politician from North Goa belonging to BJP. He has taken oath as cabinet minister of Narendra Modi’s government on 26 May 2014. He assumed the charge as Minister of State (Independent Charge), Minister of Culture. It’s his fourth term as MP from Goa and has also served as Minister of State in the Atal Bihari Vajpayee government. Naik held Agriculture, Shipping, Civil Aviation and Finance portfolios. He is the president of the Goa state unit of the Bharatiya Janata Party at present.

 

Naik belongs to influential Bhandari community which forms 27% of Goa’s population. He is widely regarded as a competitor to Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar. He has been a member of the Legislative Assembly for seven years before contesting for general elections in 1999 for the first time. He was elected to the 13th lok sabha from Panaji constituency in Goa. He retained his North Goa LS seat in 2004, 2009 and 2014 general elections from the same constituency. Though he desired to return back to state assembly in 2012, he was not given a ticket. In 2014 General elections, he won with a huge margin of 105000 votes.

 

Naik was born on 4 October 1952 at Adpai village of North Goa. He is educated from Goa and completed graduation from Mumbai. He is an Otolaryngologist and businessman by profession. He is married to Nutan and the couple has 3 children. He has served as the serpanch of village panchayat for the two terms from 1984 to 1993. He became the General Secretary of Goa wing of BJP in 1988 and later became National Executive the same year. He was elected as the President of Goa wing of BJP in 1990. After that he rose to a prominent position in the party.
