Shrinivas Khale Biography

Shrinivas Khale is one of the oldest and most respected music directors hailing from Mumbai, India. He was working in the Marathi music industry for more than six decades. He has composed music for a number of songs in Hindi, Bengali, Gujarati, Sanskrit and particularly Marathi. He is also known as Khale Kaka.

He was born on 30th April 1926 in the village of Parali in Kokan-Raigad zilla of Maaharashtra, India. His parents are Vinayak Kashinath Khale and Laxmi Vinayak Khale. They both of them did not encourage his liking for music. His elder brother Kashinath Khale was his only hope who helped to improve his musical talent. His spouse Surekha Khale supported him very much. They have three girl children – Shama, Sanjivani and Sonali. Shama and Sanjivani are his singing heirs who sang many songs for children.

He has worked with many talented artists like Lata Mangeshkar, Asha Bhosale, Suman Kalyanpur, Sulochna Chauhan,etc. He has worked to compose music for six Marathi films. He has recorded 141 poems and also composed music for theatrical plays like Paanigrahan, Vidushak and Devache paay. He is the only musician who has the proud of bringing out two Bharat Ratna Recipient singers, Lata Mangeshkar and Pandit Bhimsen Joshi.

He began his career as a music director in All India Radio in 1945. He then proceeded to his first recording of Talat Mahmood in Gramaphone Company India Limited in 1950. His first Marathi song was recorded between 1952 and 1953. He made many records in songs recording in Marathi. In order to continue his career in music, he left Baroda.

Datta Marulkar wrote a book Antaryami Surr Gavasala in 2009 describing Khale`s journey. Khale expresses in this book, his indebtedness towards God for the love, affection and support that he got from his friends and family. The book named Shrinivas Khale – Ek Sankalan was released by Mauj Publishers in 1970 for completing his victorious silver jubilee as a music director.

He has been felicitated a number of times to honor various events of his life. The notable awards of his career was Lata Mangeshkar award in 1993, Golden Disc award for completing 50 years in field of music in 1995, Sangeet Ratna Puraskar in 2007, Big Marathi Music Award and Padma Bhushan Award in 2010.
