Shreeram Shankar Abhyankar was an Indian American mathematician who has given considerable contributions to the field of algebraic geometry. He was Marshall distinguished professor of mathematics chair at Purdue University at the time of his death in 2012. He is known for Abhyankar's conjecture of finite group theory and his recent researches include - computational and algorithmic algebraic geometry. He received Chauvenet Prize from the Mathematical Association of America in 1978. He has also received Docteur Honoris Causa by the University of Angers in France in 1998 and Fellow of the Indian Academy of Sciences as well as American Mathematical Society. He was in the Editorial board member of the Indian Journal of Pure and Applied Mathematics during his death.
