Shobhana George Biography

Shobhana George is an Indian politician from the state of Kerala. She is one of the prominent female politicians of the state, currently a member of Indian National Congresss. She had a short stint with Democratic Indira Congress (Karunakaran) in the 2000s. She represented the Chengannur constituency in the Kerala Legislative Assembly in the 9th, 10th and 11th assemblies, representing the party. As of now she has served three terms as a legislator. She was the first female president of the Akhila Kerala Balajan Sakhyaman and also the first female General Secretary of the State Youth Congress Committee.

Shobana was born on 4 April 1960 in Chengannur, Alappuzha district, Kerala. She is married to Issac George and the couple has one daughter. She schooled from Govt. Girls High School, Chengannur and later graduated in economics from Kerala University in 1982. She completed Master’s in sociology from University of Mysore. She has been associated with Indian National Congress since her college days and marked her political party with the same.

She got elected to state assembly for the first time in 1991 as a candidate of Indian national Congress. She was associated with the party till 2005, and resigned as MLA on 5 July. She joined the party after she was expelled from Indian National Congress. She joined DIC along with K Karunakaran and unsuccessfully contested 2006 state assembly from Thiruvananthapuram West constituency. She later re-joined Congress. She has been associated with several political controversies since mid-1990s. In 1997 she was manhandled, while attending a District Committee meeting by her colleagues. Though she raised a complaint, it was ignored by the party. For a forged intelligence report in 2002, a non-bailable arrest warrant was issued against her.
