Shivmangal Singh Suman Biography

Shivmangal Singh ‘Suman’ was a noted Hindi poet and critic of 20^th century. He was born on August 5, 1915 in Jhagarpur, UP and died in Ujjain on November 27, 2002 aged 87. He has worked as the Vice Chancellor of Vikram University of Ujjain during 1968-78. Vice-President of Uttar Pradesh Hindi Sansthan, Lucknow and the President, Association of Indian Universities, New Delhi are other leading positions held by Suman. He was the Executive President, Kalidas Academy, Ujjain till his death. In 1950 Banaras University honoured him honorary doctorate. He received Padma Shri in 1974 and Padma Bhushan in 1999. His noted works are Mitti Ki Baarat, Hillol and Jeevan Ke Gaan.

Suman was born on August 5, 1915 at Jhagarpur, Unnao district in Uttar Pradesh. He earned a M.A. and Ph.D. in Hindi from Benaras Hindu University. Poetries published by Suman are Hillol – 1939, Jeevan ke Gaan – 1942, Mookdarshak-1942, Yug ka Mol – 1945, Vishwas Badalta hi Gaya – 1948, Pralay Srajan – 1950, Vidhya Himalaya – 1960, Mitti Ki Baarat – 1972, Vani ki Vyatha – 1980, Kate Anguthon Ki Vandanvaren - 1991 and Hum Panchi Unmukt Gagan Ke. His critic works include - Mahadevi ki Kavya Sadhana – 1951 and Geeti Kavya: Udyam Aur Vikas – 1995. He has also written one play in 1961 - Prakriti Purush Kalidas.

Mitti bi Baraat published in 1972 was his most noted work. For this book, he received Sahitya Akademi Award in 1974. He has been honoured with honorary doctorates by three universities - Banaras University in 1950, Bhagalpur University in 1973 and Jabalpur University in 1983. He has also received Soviet Land Nehru Award in 1974, Deva Puraskar in 1958, Shikhar Samman in 1993 from M.P. Govt. and Bharat Bharti Award in 1993. He is always regarded as one of the most powerful signatures in the field of Hindi poetry during 20^th century.
