Shiv Nadar Biography

Dr. Shiv Nadar is an entrepreneur and leading businessman of India. He is the founder and chairman of HCL Technologies and the Shiv Nadar Foundation. As of 2012, his personal wealth is US$ 6.2 billion. His daughter, Roshni Nadar is now the Executive Director and the CEO of HCL Corporation and look after the educational institutions and Trust started by her father.  HCL was founded in the middle 70’s and now it is one of the leading IT company after Infosys, TCS and Wipro. At first it was IT hardware company, later transferred to a software enterprise providing software services to its clients. In 2008, Nadar was awarded Padma Bhushan for his efforts in the IT industry. His nickname is Magnus. Shiv Nadar Foundation is emphasized on education and it contains numerous institutions including Shiv Nadar University at Noida and the VidyaGyan rural schools.

Shiv Nadar was born on July 14, 1945 in Thiruchendur of Thoothukudi district, Tamil Nadu. His parents were Sivasubramaniya Nadar and Vamasundari Devi. S. P. Adithanar, founder of Dina Thanthi was his uncle. Nadar did his schooling from Town Higher Secondary School, Kumbakonam. After completing his BTech in Coimbatore, he began his career at Walchand group's Cooper Engineering in Pune in 1967.

Nadar started his company with the help of his friends, Ajai Chowdhry, Arjun Malhotra, Subhash Arora, Yogesh Vaidya, S. Raman, Mahendra Pratap and DS Puri. Initially Nadar started Microcomp to sell teledigital calculators in the Indian market. HCL was found in 1976 with an initial investment of Indian rupees 187,000. He opened ‘Far East Computers’ in Singapore to sell IT hardware. Thus his small company began to grow internationally with one million rupee revenue in the first year. Nadar remained the largest shareholder without retaining any management control.

He founded SSN College of Engineering in Chennai in 1996 in the name of his father. He put up a lot of efforts in the development of his education institutions by distributing Rs. 1 million worth of HCL shares also. Now his educational institutions have spread their wings a lot and have many branches. They provide free scholarship to students of rural areas of UP too.
