Shiv Chawrasia Biography

Shiv Chawrasia is an Indian professional golfer who is active in this field for more than two decades . Since 2008 he has won six Asian Tour events representing his country and won Hero Indian Open in 2016 and 2017 seasons. He was runner-up in 1999, 2006, 2013 and 2015 seasons of Hero Indian Open. Though he has registered many title wins in his international career, 2016 Resorts World Manila Masters is his single title win outside India. In August 2017, he was awarded the Arjuna Award for his contributions and achievements in Indian sports. He is nicknamed "Chip-putt-sia" because of his short game.

 

Shiv Shankar Prasad Chawrasia was born on 15 May 1978 in Kolkata, West Bengal. He is shortly addressed as S. S. P. Chawrasia. His father worked as the greenskeeper at the Royal Calcutta Golf Club in Kolkata. At the age of 10, Shiv attended a golf course which proved to be a turning point of his life. Later he became a self-taught golfer, who made a mark in the field of Indian golf. He was a Caddie for a few years before he marked his professional debut. He entered golf scene in the year 1997. As of now, he has spent 22 years in this field.

 

Started his career in 1997, he took only a little time to reach the top slot of golf players. He finished just behind Arjun Atwal as runner-up in the 1999 Indian Open held at the Royal Calcutta Golf Club, and from there on he got media attention for his performances. His career reached full swing by second half of 2000s, and later he won many international tournaments, mostly conducted in India. Chawrasia qualified for the 2016 Summer Olympics as the second highest ranked Indian player and represented his country aside Anirban Lahiri.
