Shekhar Kapur Biography

Shekhar Kapur is the most versatile film maker of India during 1990’s who has directed internationally well acclaimed movie – Elizabeth in the year 1998. The movie won international fame and earned 7 Academic nominations as well. Among the Indian movies, Bandit Queen of 1996 was most popular though it has been in the midst of a lot of controversies particularly the nude scene pictured on Seema Biswas. His directorial debut ‘Masoom’ and mega block buster Mr.India are still considered great wonders of Bollywood celluloid. Both these movies will surely include in the top 10 movies of the era of 1980’s of Bollywood. Sequel of Hollywood movie Elizabeth – The Golden Age repeated the success of its prequel. He was married to pop singer Suchitra Krishnamoorthy but got separated in the year 2007.

 

Shekhar Kapur started his career as a Bollywood actor in the movie Jaan Haasir hai followed by Ishq ishq ishq and Tootta Khilowna during middle 70’s. He has also acted a series of movies like Khanjar, Jeena yahan, Falak, Bindiya and Ishq ishq Ishq. But very soon he identified that his path is something else and he made his directorial debut with the movie ‘Masoom’. This movie was the first movie of Urmila and Jugal Husraj as the child artists with the famous song Lakdi ki khati. The film featured Shabana Azmi and Nasarudden Shah in the leading roles with hit music of R.D.Burman.  

 

He waited for 3 more years to release his second movie as a director. Before Bandit Queen and Elizabeth happened, this actor was remembered for the movie Mr.India and its famous dialogue, ‘Mogambo khush hua’. Sri Devi and Anil Kapoor played the leading roles along with Satish Kaushik and a group of kids. The fresh theme, beautiful songs and lovely kids attracted the masses. The song ‘Kaate nahi katthe’ was one among the last songs of Kishore Kumar before he died in 1987.

 

Shekhar Kapur has also acted as co-producer in movies like Dil se, The Guru and Documentary film, Bollywood: The Greatest Love Story Ever Told. His other notable works include The Four feathers, New York I love you and Passage. He has already announced his next venture titled Paani.
