Shekhar Joshi Biography

Shekhar Joshi is an Indian writer associated with Hindi literature. His rare insight into the culture of the Uttarakhand Himalayas has made him stand out among litterateurs. Through his works, he beautifully portrayed culture, traditions and lifestyles of people of Uttarakhand. He has published short stories, poetry and novels. He along with Sumitranandan Pant is widely regarded as the most influential Hindi writers from Uttarakhand. His acclaimed story, Dajyu has been made into a children’s film by the Children's Film Society of India. Many of his works have been translated to other languages.

 

Shekhar Joshi was born in September 1932 in present-day Uttarakhand. He belonged to the village of Oliyagaon, Almora district, and was born into a farmers’ family. He schooled from Dehradun and Ajmer. He got selected for entry to the Defence Institute of E.M.I while doing his intermediate studies and joined government service in 1955. He had a long term association with defence department and worked for more than three decades till his retirement in 1986. He resigned from the job to fully concentrate on to writing.

 

Some of his published works include - 10 Pratinidhi Kahaniyan, Naurangi Bimar Hai, Bachche Ka Sapna, Dangri Vale, Mera Pahar etc. Kosi Ka Ghatwar and Dajyu are among his most popular stories. His story “Scenario” brings the beauty of the Himalayas seen from the eyes of Ravi, a young documentary filmmaker who visits the mountains to make a film on the Himalayas. It gives a full sketch of the beauty of Himalayas. He is settled in Allahabad now. The writings of Joshi can be described as “modern” in many ways - in their themes, treatment of the subject and the use of language.
