Shekhar Dutt Biography

Shekhar Dutt is an Indian administrator and IAS officer, who served as the governor of Chhattisgarh during the period, January 23rd 2010 - June 19th 2014. He has earlier served as Defence Secretary of India during July 29th 2005 - July 31st 2007 followed by Deputy National Security Advisor of India during 27 July 2007 – 2009. After retiring from government service, he was appointed as the governor of Chhattisgarh. In between, Dutt was named to the board of trustees of DeSales University in September 2009. This military officer has been associated with Indo-Pakistani War of 1971 as a short service commission officer, during his early years in administrative field.

 

Dutt joined Indian Administrative Service in the year 1969. He belonged to Madhya Pradesh cadre. He was appointed as a short service commission officer in the Indian Army during the Indo-Pakistani War of 1971, and was awarded the Sena Medal for gallantry. After that he has held many high order administrative posts within Madhya Pradesh government. He has served as Principal Secretary in the Department of Tribal and Scheduled Caste Welfare, School Education, Sports & Youth Welfare at different points of time.

 

When Afro-Asian Games were held in Hyderabad in 2003, he played a major role as an administrator and authority in charge. He was appointed as Joint Secretary in the Department of Defence Production, followed by Defence Secretary of India in 2005. He rose to the rank of secretary in the new post. He published one book, “Reflections on Contemporary India” in February 2014, while serving as the Governor of Chhattisgarh. Dutt has served in the defence ministry in various capacities in his 38-year career.
