Shekhar Chatterjee Biography

Shekhar Chatterjee is a noted actor and director associated with Bengali cinema. An artist with leftist ideas, he was an active member of Indian People's Theatre Association, owned by Communist Party of India. He was also associated with Utpal Dutt's Little Theatre Group, and Joan Littlewood's Theatre Workshop, and also formed his own troupe. His name is often credited as Shekhar Chattopadhyay in Bengali movies. Vasundhara in 1983 is his solo movie as a film director and he has also written scripts of movies like Raag Anurag and Basanata Bilap. He has been associated with Bengali cinema since early 1960s and has played numerous character roles onscreen.

 

He was born in Kolkata in 1924 during British Rule. His career began as a stage actor in the early 1950s after Indian independence. Influenced by leftist ideas, he was mostly associated with such plays and troupes and had a long relationship with Indian People's Theatre Association, where he appeared in many prominent plays. He excelled in Shakespeare characters on stage (for many of translation works to Bengali). After associated with different theatre troupes, he started his own troupe - Theatre Unit in 1958. Shardul Singh in Dutt's 1965 play Kallol is one of his memorable roles.

 

Later he focused on direction and he mostly adapted works of German authors like Bertold Brecht, Friedrich Durrenmatt, Peter Handke, and Franz Xaver Kroetz. He translated their German plays to Bengali. As a film actor too, he has portrayed over 100 character roles onscreen. He was also seen in 1982 film – Gandhi. Some of his noted films include – Anugraham, Mrigayaa, Chorus, Ek Adhuri Kahani, Ali Baba, Bhuvan Shome, Interview, Joradighir Chowdhury Paribar, Rajakanya etc. Now he has retired from film scene.
