Sheila Dikshit Biography

Sheila Dikshit is the Chief Minister of Delhi. She belongs to the Indian National Congress party. She became the Chief Minister of Delhi for the third time in January 2009 and is the second women Chief Minister of Delhi.

Sheila Dikshit was born on 31st March 1938. She studied at Miranda House, University of Delhi. She got Master of Arts degree and later did her Ph.D. in University of Delhi. She married Vinod Dikshit, an IAS officer and has two children, Sandeep Dikshit and Latika Syed. Her husband belongs to the family of Umashankar Dikshit who was a notable independence activist. He was a former Governor and Union Cabinet Minister representing Unnao Constituency in Ugu district, Uttar Pradesh. Her son Sandeep Dikshit is a member of parliament selected from East Delhi Constituency.

In the elections of 1984 and 1989, she was selected from the Kannauj Parliamentary Constituency of Uttar Pradesh. She served as the Union Minister during 1986-89 as the Minister of State for Parliamentary Affairs and then as the Minster of State in the Prime Minister’s Office. She represented India for five years from 1984 to 1989 at United Nations Commission on Status of Women.

She headed the Implementation Committee for Commemoration of Forty Years of India's Independence and the Implementation Committee for Jawaharlal Nehru centenary. She was shortlisted though not selected for the World Mayor Award 2008. The Journalist Association of India selected her as the Best Chief Minister of India on 12th July 2008. In 2009, NDTV awarded her Politician of the Year.

She led the movement against the atrocities committed on women and was arrested with her 83 colleagues in April 1990. She was in prison for 23 days. She is serving as the Secretary of Indira Gandhi Memorial Trust. She was criticized for granting parole to Manu Sharma who is accused of murdering Jessica Lal and sentenced to life.
