Sheik Chinna Moulana Biography

Sheik Chinna Moulana was a legendary nagaswaram player from Andhra Pradesh. He played in Carnatic tradition of music. Recipient of numerous honours and recipients,  "Kalaimamani" by Government of Tamil Nadu in 1976, Central Sangeet Natak Academy award and Padma Shri in 1977, "Sangeetha Kalanidhi" – conferred by Music Academy, Chennai in 1999 etc are the major honours received by him. He has been conferred with an honorary doctorate by Andhra University in 1985. He also holds many titles in music - Ganakala Prapooma, Nadhaswara Kalanidhi, Sangeetha Vidhwanmani, Sapthagiri Vidhwanmani, Madhura Kala Praveena, Isai Peraringar etc. He was given an Emeritus Fellowship by government of India in 1993.

 

He was born into a traditional music family of nadhaswaram players in Guntur, Andhra Pradesh who has been playing the instrument for more than 300 years. He was born in the year 1924. Obviously Sheik too was introduced to the world of music at a very young age. Vidhwan Adam Sahib, Vidhwan Rasav Aripalem Kasim sahib, Sheik Adam sahib of Chilakaluripeta, Chinna Peeru Sahib and Peddha Peeru Sahib Brothers were among his ancestors who excelled in Nadhaswaram. He was born in Karavadi Village of Prakasam District.

 

He received formal training from his father Sheik Kasim Sahib followed by Throvagunta Shaik Hassan Saheb and Sheik Adam Sahib. He also trained in Thanjavur Bani from Mrs. Rajam and Duraikannu brothers of Nachiarkovil. He gave his first public performance in the early 1960s and came into prominence within a short time span. He later settled in Srirangam as he was a great devotee of Lord Ranganatha. In the 1970s and 1980s, he has delivered many outstanding performances in India as well as abroad, apart from several musical festivals. He served as Professor of music in the Raja's Government Music College, Thiruvaiyaru. He was active with his live concerts till his death on 13 April 1999.
