Shaukat Hussain Rizvi Biography
Shaukat Hussain Rizvi was a pioneer of Pakistani cinema, who was born in Uttar Pradesh. He was married to the very famous singing queen of Bollywood - Noor Jehan. Apart from a film director, Rizvi was known as a producer, editor and character artist. He learnt the art of cinema from Ezra Mir, one of the finest technicians.
Rizvi was born into a reputed Syed family in Azamgarh city, Uttar Pradesh in 1914. He visited Madras for the first time when he was a teenager. He began his professional career as an assistant projectionist in Kolkata in the early 1930s and slowly earned an editing job. He learnt the art of film making from Ezra Mir in those days and he decided to choose editing and film making as profession. Finely dressed, this handsome young man easily got attention from the reputed film family. His first break was given by Seth Dalsukh M. Pancholi, who brought him to Lahore and offered him the editing job for the movies - Gul Bakavli (1939) and Khazanchi (1941). Dalsukh Pancholi gave him the first movie as a director - Khandaan, released in 1942 which became a huge hit. Thus Rizvi marked his successful career as a film director. The movie starred Noor Jehan and Pran in lead roles and he married Noor Jehan later.
After the success of the movie, Rizvi and Noor Jehan moved to Mumbai where they got married. However their next venture, Naukar (1943) was a failure. After their marriage, they together delivered numerous hits to Bollywood. The couple had numerous hits like Jugnu and Zeenat. The couple had three children. After partition the couple moved to Pakistan where they got settled with children. They continued with films. Their grandchildren - Sonya Jehan, Sikander Rizvi and Ahmed Ali Butt are Pakistani actors.
