Shashi Kapoor Biography

Shashi kapoor – the youngest of Kapoor trios has a lot to tell about the journey in Bollywood. Born as the son of great Pritviraj Kapoor of Kapoor Dynasty and the youngest brother of Raj Kapoor and Shammi Kapoor, it was not at all difficult for Shashi kapoor to enter the film world. He acted as a child artist in many movies including Meena, Tadbir and Bachpan in 1940’s. Most of them were mythological movies. In Aag and Awara, he played the childhood roles of his elder brother Raj Kapoor.

He marked his Bollywood career as hero in 1961 with the movie Dharmaputra.  He acted in 116 movies that include solo hero, multi star cast and supporting actor roles. He shares an amazing chemistry with Amitabh Bachchan. When he gave preference to solo performances during 60’s, he changed his direction towards multi star cast movies in 70’s. Amitabh Bachchan- Shashi Kapoor combination has given some magical hits to Bollywood that include Deewar, Suhaag, Trishul, Kabhi Kabhi, Kaala Pathar, Shaan, Silsila, Suhaag and Namak Halal. Though he has done solo hero roles and multi-star roles, he was well received by audience in multi-star cast movies. Waqt, Chori mere kaam, Swayamvar, Muqqadar and Chakkar pe chakkar can also be included in the list.

His top hits as solo hero include Neend Hamari Khwab Tumhare,Sharmilee,  Hassena maan jaayegi, Pyar ka mausam, Kanyadaan, Abhinetri, Jab jab phool khile and Aa gale lag jaa. His movies include melodious songs as well. Sharmilee, Pyar ka mausam and Kabhi Kabhi still rule the whole musical world. He was paired almost with all actresses of that time. Nanda, Sharmila Tagore, Hema Malini, Rakhee, Babitha, Parveen Babi and Neethu Singh.

For the role in Utsav, he increased his weight. But later, he was not able to restore his original figure that resulted in shifting his career to character roles. Death of his beloved wife was another reason. Though he has given amazing contributions to Hindi cinema through his unparallel acting skills, he is still not able to win a film fare award in the leading role. But he was able to get National awards for his wonderful role in New Delhi Times in 1986. As a producer he won National award for best film – movie was Junoon. He got special jury award for Muhafiz. He won film fare award only once for his supporting role in Deewar. In 2009, he was given life time achievement award by Mumbai film festival and Pune International film festival.
