Sharad Kumar Biography

Sharad Kumar is an Indian para high jumper and athlete who hails from Patna, Bihar. He made his International debut at the 2010 Asian Para Games, and has remained as the word no: 1 position in ranking in high jump. He won his first international gold at 2014 Asian Para Games, breaking a 12-year Asian Games record. It also helped him to reclaim no: 1 position in world ranking. He won Silver in 2017 World Para Athletics Championships, and finished 6th at 2016 Summer Paralympics. He received training from SAI and was coached by National High-Jump Coach Nikitan uffgan.

 

Sharad Kumar was born on 1 March 1992 in Patna, Bihar. He suffered paralysis of left leg at the age of 2, after taking spurious polio medicine at a local eradication drive. He schooled at Darjeeling, and got interested in jumping while studying at class 7. Later he participated in many school competitions till national level, winning many prizes and breaking several records. After 10th he moved to Delhi to do higher secondary studies, and he completed his graduation as well.

 

He made his international debut in 2010 at the Asian Para Games in Guangzhou. From there on, he made some of the finest performances of his career, reaching at no: 1 position in world ranking when he was only 19. He was qualified for the 2012 Paralympics and he also participated in the 2016 Summer Paralympics finishing sixth. His career faced a downstream when he was test positive for a banned drug. The test was conducted before London Paralympics and he couldn’t participate in it. He made a comeback in the 2014 Para Asian Games, winning gold.
