Shankha Ghosh Biography

Shankha Ghosh is a Bengali Indian poet and critic. One of the prolific writers belonging to Bengali literature, he is a leading authority on Rabindranath works. For his outstanding contributions to the field of Bengali literature in the form of poetry and critic works, Indian government honoured him with Padma Bhushan in 2011. Adim lata-gulmomay, ’Murkha baro, samajik nay’, Mukh dheke jay bigyapane, Babarer prarthana and Kabir abhipray are his selected works. He is also a recipient of Sahitya Akademi Award for the year 1977 for his work - Baabarer praarthanaa. Most recently in 2015 he was honoured by an honorary doctorate by Indian Institute of Engineering Science and Technology, Shibpur. In 2010 he was awarded the same by Vidyasagar University.

He was born in Chandpur of British India, now a part of Bangladesh. He was born on February 6, 1932. He completed his graduation from Presidency College, Kolkata in the year 1951, followed by his Master’s degree from the University of Calcutta. Later he worked as a professor in many colleges of Kolkata and other cities. He has also taught at the prestigious Visva-Bharati University. He retired from Jadavpur University in 1992 and later dedicated his time to his literary works. His mastery over Bengali language and his absolute control over the form and style of poetry mark his poems with excellence.

A popular Bengali poet, some of his popular poems are Chup Koro, Shobdohin Hao, Brishti, Moha Nimgachh, Shorir Diyechho Shudhu, Mukh Dheke Jay Biggapone, Shunner Bhitore Dheu, Jomunaboti, Thaka, Trital, Surjomukhi, Proticchhobi, Jhore Porar Shobdo Jane Tumi Amar Noshto..., Bormokhani Bhule..., Matal and Punorbason. His poems are regularly recited in cultural events and Kavi sammalens. He is also a recipient of Narasimh Das Puraskar 1977, Kumaran Asan Prize 1982, Rabindra Puraskar 1989, Kamalkumari Award 1993 and Saraswati Samman 1998.
