Shankar Guha Niyogi Biography

Shankar Guha Niyogi was a popular trade union leader of Chhattisgarh, who was the founder of the Chhattisgarh Mukti Morcha, a labor union in the state. He was shot and killed while asleep on 28 September 1991. There were so many controversies surrounding the trial and verdict. While the lower court awarded strict punishments to all suspects, the upper court spared all except one accused, and the acquitted included two industrialists, which stirred a lot of controversies. Shankar was only 48 when he was murdered in the early 1990s.

 

Shankar Guha Niyogi was born into a middle class family in 14 February 1943 in Assam. Heramba Kumar and Kalyani were his parents. Shankar’s primary education was done at Jamunamukh of the Naogaon district of Assam. The beautiful landscape of his village made him a nature lover since young. Later he moved to his uncle at Sanktoria coalfield area near Asansol, where he continued his education. In those days, he came to contact with labourers and started understanding the hardships they are facing to earn a living. While doing his Intermediate Science Course in Jalpaiguri, he got involved in student movement and he got deeply influenced with the food movement all over Bengal in 1959.

 

He joined Communist party and worked as a student organizer. While he was involved with student politics, he couldn’t concentrate on to his studies. But on a family recommendation, he received an engineering seat. But he declined it and left home. He waited till he turned 18 and then worked in a plant. Very soon he turned a leader and thus began his career as a trade union leader. He founded Chhattisgarh Mukti Morcha, a political party for his vision towards labor of Rajhara Mines.
