Shankar Ghosh Biography

Pandit Shankar Ghosh is a famous tabla player from the Farukhabad gharana of Hindustani classical music. The tabla and the name Pandit Shankar Ghosh could be said to be synonymous and regarded to be one among the best tabla artists ever. He occasionally performs as a vocalist in Patiala gharana style also. He received Sangeet Natak Akademi Award in Tabla in the year 2000, the highest honour by Akademi for an Indian artist. ITC Sangeet Research Academy award and the Ustad Hafiz Ali Khan award are other major awards received by him. He is married to Hindustani classical vocalist of Patiala gharana, Sanjukta Ghosh. Tabla maestro Bickram Ghosh is his son. He has performed live with leading Indian vocalists like Ustad Bade Ghulam Ali Khan, Girija Devi, Pandit Omkarnath Thakur, Pandit Vinayak Rao Patwardhan and Akhtari Bai.

 

He was born in the year 1935 in Bengal. Ghosh received his early training from Pandit Anath Nath Ghosh. Later he learnt under Ustad Feroz Khan of Punjab Gharana, Pandit Sudardhan Adhikari of Lucknow Gharana and finally from the legendary maestro Pandit Gyan Prakash Ghosh, founder of the Calcutta Gharana. He learnt Hindustani music and instrumental music from Sri Prasun Banerjee and Ustad Ali Akbar Khan respectively.

 

In 1962, he toured in foreign countries for the first time with sarod maestro, Ustad Ali Akbar Khan for which he won rave reviews. Pandit Ravi Shankar, Ustad Vilayat Khan, Pandit Nikhil Banerjee, Sharan Rani and Pandit V. G. Jog are a few more names with whom Ghosh has toured with. Greg Ellis, Pete Lockett and John Bergamo are the international artists with whom he has collaborated with. He has been a professor at the Universities of McGill and Montreal in Canada.
