Shanimol Usman Biography

Shanimol Usman is an influential politician from the state of Kerala, associated with UDF. In 2019 Lok Sabha elections, when UDF almost swept all seats in Kerala, she became the only UDF candidate to lose 2019 Lok Sabha elections. She contested from Alappuzha parliament constituency in 2019 election as Indian National Congress candidate and lost to Adv. A. M. Ariff of Communist Party of India by 10474 votes. One of the leading female politicians from the country, she is the first women leader from Kerala to become the secretary of All India Congress Committee. Her husband Usman has been a national level basket player.

 

Shanimol Usman hails from Alappuzha, and she was born on 30 May 1966. She was born into a Muslim family as the daughter of A. Ibrahimkutty and T E. Surakutty. She married former national level basket player A. Mohammed Usman, who is also a professional lawyer. Reading, gardening and drawing are her personal hobbies. She came to nationwide attention for the first time when she became the secretary of All India Congress Committee.

 

In 2019 she became one among the two UDF candidates to contest Lok Sabha elections. For Shanimol Usman and Ramya Haridas, it was for the first time they contest general elections. When all UDF candidates of Kerala including Ramya Haridas won general elections with a huge margin giving a stunning victory to state opposition party, Shanimol Usman became the only unlucky UDF candidate to loss it. Out of 20 seats, UDF won 19 seats, with half of them with a majority of over 1 lakh votes, and it’s UDF’s best performance in Lok Sabha elections for the past few decades.
