Shammu Biography

Shammu is a south Indian film actress who predominantly works in Tamil cinema. Kanchivaram and Mayilu are her noted works till now. She has also played lead roles in Malayan, Mayilu, Paalai and Maathi Yosi. Her real name is Sheerin Sharmilee and she was born in Bikaner, Rajasthan to a Tamil family from Neyveli. Shammu is a trained bharatnatyam dancer. An NRI, Shammu quit acting and returned back to Florida to pursue a career in medicine at University of Central Florida. She earned Filmfare Award for Best Supporting Actress – Tamil for the movie, Kanchivaram where she appeared as Prakash Raj’s daughter.

 

Born in Rajasthan to a Tamil family, Shammu and her family moved to US at a younger age where she completed schooling.  Her father is an IT consultant who runs his own office while her mother is a housewife. She entered movies while doing her schooling at Cypress Creek High School in Orlando, Florida. Then she quit her regular studies to join film industry and in parallel, she completed matriculation through online classes. She made her acting debut through Dasavathaaram in 2008, where she played a bit role. Later its director, K. S. Ravikumar advised her to do portfolio. Her major break came in the form of Kanchivaram, where she played Prakash Raj's daughter’s role. For this breakthrough performance, she earned Filmfare Award for Best Supporting Actress – Tamil. Same year she made her lead role debut through Malayan, where she appeared opposite Karan. But the movie bombed at box office.

 

Later she appeared in Tamil movie - Kanden Kadhalai in a cameo appearance. It was followed by lead roles in Malayan, Mayilu, Paalai and Maathi Yosi. She lived with her parents in US for 12 years before her film debut. While at US, she watched Tamil movies and channels and spoke mother tongue at home.
