Shalini Moghe Biography

Shalini Moghe was a social worker and educationalist who lived in Indore, Madhya Pradesh. She is the daughter of Padma Bhushan Vinayak Sitaram Sarwate, a Marathi freedom fighter, political leader, and author. Shalini Moghe too was a recipient of many honours in recognition to her social work, Padma Shri 1968, Jamnalal Bajaj Award 1992 and Nai Duniya Nayika Lifetime Achievement Award to mention a few. She was the chairperson of the Bharatiya Grameen Mahila Sangh, Indore, which works for the physically challenged, poor and weaker sections of the society. She was fondly called Shalini Tai.

She got inspiration to become a social worker from her father, Vinayak Sitaram Sarwate who was a leading name in social service then. Shalini was born in Indore on 13 March 1914. She took a diploma in Montessori education and did advanced training in Juvenile Court and Child Welfare. Then she took a government job. However she quit the job to start a nursery school, the first Montessori school in the city. After three years she started Bal Niketan Sangh, which slowly branched to many welfare programs within the city.

Moghe started a nursery in a sweepers' colony in 1953. Observing her efforts, state government nominated her as a member of the Madhya Pradesh State Social Welfare Board, and also placed two adivasi districts under her control. She used this situation to create awareness about the activities she do as a social worker. Very soon she founded Kasturba Kanya School in Jhabua and also established a toy library in 1971. Under the aegis of Bal Niketan Sangh, she established a BEd college. As an educationalist she initiated many programs benefitting rural people. She was married to Dada Saheb Moghe, a civil servant. She lived a long life of 97 and spent her last days in Indore.
