Shakuntala Paranjpye Biography

Shakuntala Paranjpye was a noted writer, politician, social worker and a film actress from Maharashtra. She is a recipient of Padma Bhushan in 1991 for her tireless work and success in the field of family planning since 1938. The popular control of Maharashtra at present attributes a lot to the activities of this social worker. She was a nominated member of Rajya Sabha during 1964–70. She has also served as a member of Maharashtra Legislative Council during 1958–64. She spent more than two decades in Indian film industry since 1930s where she portrayed numerous roles onscreen.

 

She is the daughter of R. P. Paranjpe, an administrator, educationist and ambassador; the first Indian to achieve the coveted title of Senior Wrangler at the University of Cambridge. Noted cine artist Sai Paranjpye is her daughter. She was born on 17 January 1906. She studied Mathematics from Cambridge University and Diploma in Education from London University. As a social worker, she worked in International Labour Organization in Geneva, Switzerland during the 1930s, before she switched on to an acting career. She acted in both Marathi and Hindi movies and her most notable work is ‘Duniya na Maane’ directed by V. Shantaram.

 

Apart from acting career she authored many books also. It includes plays, sketches, and novels in Marathi, apart from a few English works. She had a brief marriage with a Russian painter, Youra Sleptzoff in the 1930s and had one daughter, Sai Paranjpye.  The couple separated soon after Sai’s birth. Sai later went on to become a highly acclaimed director for the movies - Sparsh, Katha, Chasme Buddoor, Disha etc, and a winner of Padma Bhushan similar to her mother. Towards the end of her life, Shakuntala fully dedicated herself to social work.
