Shaktisinh Gohil Biography

Shaktisinh Gohil is a senior congress politician from Gujarat, who has served as MLA and state Minister in state cabinet. He has held the portfolios - Finance, Health and Education for two consecutive terms. He also remained as Leader of opposition of Gujarat state assembly from 2007 to 2012. He served as Chairman of Public Accounts Committee (Gujarat) during 5 August 2014 – 22 December 2017. He remained Member of Gujarat Legislative Assembly during 1990-1995, 1995-1998, 2007-2012 and 2014-2017, four times.

Shaktisinh was born on 4 April 1960 into a royal family at Limda in Bhavnagar district of present day Gujarat state. His grandfather Darbar Saheb Shri Ranjitsinhji has been a veteran in Indian National Congress, and served as state MLA too. Following his grandfather’s footsteps, Gohil also reached politics, and succeeded as a leader in state level politics. He took Diploma in Computers and Diploma in Journalism, also earned graduation degree and LL.M before he turned an active politician.

Since mid-1980s, he became fully involved with politics as a young leader. He became president of the Bhavnagar district Youth Congress Party in 1986 and General Secretary of Gujarat State Youth Congress in 1989. Since then he rose to many prominent positions in the state level party. Gohil became member of AICC in 1990, and contested his first state assembly elections in 1990 where he got elected from Bhavnagar South Constituency. Since then he has been elected as MLA for three more times to state assembly.

He became minister of state in 1991, soon after he joined state assembly for the first time. He handled a series of portfolios, becoming the younger minister of Gujarat with highest number of portfolios. Finance, Education, Health, Environment, Narmada, General Administration Department, Technical Education and Education Policy are the portfolios held by him during this term till 1995, before he reelected to assembly once again.
