Shaheen Mistri Biography

Shaheen Mistri is a social activist and educator, and the founder of Akanksha Foundation, an NGO which teaches underprivileged kids. She also serves as the CEO of Teach For India since 2008. She is also a member of organizations such as Design for Change and Ummeed. She is an ex-member of the board of India School Leadership Institute, the Thermax Foundation, and Teach for All. She has published one book - Redrawing India: The Teach For India Story in 2014. She is a recipient of a few honours and awards including Ashoka Fellow (2001), Global Leader for Tomorrow at the World Economic Forum (2002) and Asia Society 21 Leader (2006).

Shaheen Mistri was born in Mumbai on 16 March 1971 in a Parsi family. Her father was a senior banker with Citigroup, who worked in many foreign countries, and for the same reason she was brought up in different cities across the globe where she completed her education. At the age of 18 she returned to Mumbai, as she was more interested to learn about the city and its slums. She learnt about inequalities in India’s education system, and was shocked to see it. Mistri pursued Sociology from St. Xavier's College, University of Mumbai, and then moved to Manchester for her Master’s degree.

While she was doing graduation in Mumbai, she learnt more about slums in the city and used to regularly visit such places. She started teaching underprivileged kids in slums. Shaheen founded the first Akanksha Center in 1989, enrolling 15 children. A few of her colleagues were employed for this purpose. Akanksha centre slowly changed to Akanksha Foundation, which currently reaches out to over 6500 children through its School Project Model.
