Shagun Chowdhary Biography

Shagun Chowdhary is an Indian sportswoman excelling in the game of shooting. She got a chance to represent India in the 2012 London Olympics. She is the first female trap shooter to get this opportunity from India. Her father is Sushil Chowdhary and he was a Skeet shooter. He introduced the art of shooting to his daughter when she was just a small child.

She was born on 26th June 1983 in Jaipur in Rajasthan and lives in New Delhi. When she wanted to concentrate in shooting her mother wanted her to become a doctor or pursue an MBA degree. She completed her schooling at Maharani Gayatri Devi Girl’s School in Jaipur and continued her bachelor’s degree at Jesus and Mary College. It was only after winning her first international medal in 2003 she was allowed to take up shooting as her career. Her coach is an Italian named Marcello Dradi who trained her well. She attributes her success to her sports psychologist Vaibhav Agashe.

She was initially practicing with a toy gun and then concentrated in double trap until 2004. She won bronze in this category in Asian Clay Championships in 2003 and in 2005 she moved to trap which is a much faster sport. In the World Championships held at Belgrade she could score an impressive 72.

She has great mental strengths and was sponsored by the Olympic Gold Quest, a non-profit organization run by the billiards champion Geet Sethi and former badminton champion Prakash Padukone to take part in the Olympics. Though her father is a good shooter, the game of shooting is still male lineage and hardly ever passed on to a daughter but still she took it up and trying hard to prove her skills.
