Shabbir Kumar Biography

Shabbir Kumar is a playback singer of Bollywood who has sung many hit movie songs during 1980’s. He has rendered his voice for leading actors like Amitabh Bachchan, Sunny Deol, Rishi Kapoor, Govinda, Mithun Chakravarthy and Anil Kapoor during 1980’s and his best songs belong to Woh saat din, Coolie, Woh saat din, Mard, Shola aur Shabnam, Betaab, Dacait, Meri Jung, Pyar jhuktha nahi and  Aaj ki Arjun. In fact he was regarded as the voice of Sunny Deol during middle 80’s and has sung all his songs for Sunny’s debut movie Betaab too. Shabbir Kumar regards Mohd.Rafi as his true inspiration and started his career singing in a concert, ‘Ek shyam Rafi ke naam’, as a tribute to him.

He debut Bollywood in the year 1981 with the movie Tajurba; Usha Khanna was the music director. Shabbir Kumar landed into Bollywood industry at a time when Mukesh and Mohd.Rafi just passed away and only the voice left among the legends was Kishore Kumar. Thus a great void was left in music industry. As it was a time when new/young actors entered Bollywood – Anil Kapoor, Rishi Kapoor, Sunny Deol, Govinda and Chunkey Pandey, Shabbir’s voice was most used for some young actors and it suited well too. His voice was used for many Amitabh Bachchan movies like Collie, Aaj ka Arjun, Mard etc of which his last song for Big B – Gori hai kalayiyan of Aaj ka arjun was very popular. For the movie, Woh Saat din starring Anil kapoor and Padmini Kolhapure in the leading role, romantic song ‘Pyar kiya nahi jaatha’ was quite popular.

When Sunny Deol entered the industry, his voice was used by R.D.Burman to sing all songs of Betaab. Songs like Jab hum jawa honge, Tumne de aawaz, Badal Yun Garajta Hai and Apne Dil Se Badi Dushmani Ki helped a lot for the huge success of the movie. Sochna Kya from Ghayal, Saari duniya ka bojh from Coolie, Shaam Hai Ye Kuch Khoyi Khoyi from Prem Tapasya, Aana Jana Laga Rahega from Giraftaar, Mere Yaar Ko Mere Allah from Deceit and Tumse Milkar Naa Jaane Kyon from Pyar Jhukta Nahin are his notable songs.  During early 90’s due to the tough completion from young singers he slowly retrieved to singing concerts only and has shown a comeback most recently with the movie Houseful.
