Sebastian Xavier Biography

Sebastian Xavier - the undisputed champion in 50m freestyle in India for over eight years in the 1990s is a former swimmer from Kerala. Sebastian – the winner of 36 gold medals at the SAF Games, SAF Championships and Asia Pacific meets and 66 gold medals in the national meets is one among the most prominent Indian swimmers in the past two decades or so. Xavier has been honoured with the prestigious Arjuna Award in the year 2001 for his contributions to Indian sports. He was also recognized by Kerala government through `lifetime achievement award'. He represented India in the 1996 Olympics Games at Atlanta, two Asian Games and in several SAF games. He is married to former athlete Molly Chacko and the couple works with Southern Railways.

 

The ace swimmer was born on 10 February 1970 in Edathua of Alappuzha district. He was the 10th among the 11 siblings. Born into a land of lakes and water bodies, ponds and streams around his house mould him into one of India's well known swimmers. He did his schooling in St. Aloysius High School and later studied at St. Aloysius College, Edathua. It was during his college days when he came to limelight as a senior swimmer representing Kerala at various sports events. He joined South Indian railways and continued with his success journey over the years. He enjoyed his career peak throughout 1990s. In the career spanning to more than one decade he accumulated over 200 medals in different events.

 

He first came into the limelight at the national level in 1988. His Physical Director, Mr Antony at St. Aloysius College, Edathua spotted his talent and took him under his wing for specialised training. Sebastian entered swimming pool the next year and there was no turning back after that. In 1989 he five gold medals including the newly introduced 50 metre freestyle at the National level swimming championships held at Thiruvananthapuram and later claimed over 200 medals in his career. The national record of 22.89 seconds in 50 meters freestyle swimming for 11 years for more than a decade from 1998 to 2009 was held by none other than this ace swimmer.
